Girl Scout has a boogie at Brudenell Social Club

On the 6th of October, Leeds’ beloved, one and only, Brudenell Social Club hosted a remarkable night of live music that will be remembered by fans and music enthusiasts, and, of course, us! Aire Street Studio payed them a visit to witness Girl Scout’s set live and direct, as well as to just check out the venue, which has long boasted impressive acts, such as Kaiser Chiefs, and Franz Ferdinand. Thought we may as well document the all-too-exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ of gigs and journalism for you whilst we were at it, coz why not? Before I even got in, the Uber driver was hyping up this incredible venue, talking about what a social hub it is for Leeds’ community, so you can guess I went in with some pretty high expectations.

It met every single one of them. After showing that glorious press email, they handed me that beautiful, sweet (free) press pass, and I entered. The event space was swamped with people as they socialised and reunited with friends. There was a stand with staff, selling Coach Party merchandise, as attendees were surrounding them, ogling at t-shirts, hats, and all of the scrumptious goods they had to offer. If you’re wanting a new hoodie for the upcoming infamously colder UK seasons, or a new authentic, underground vinyl to show off your indie-loving mates, you know where to go! But a kickass merch stand was not all this gem of a venue had to offer. Brudenell Social Club also boasted a bar I would recommend to any well-minded lover of all things drink and alcohol.

Since it was constantly bustling with a never-ending long queue of eager gig-goers waiting to quench their thirst, I am more than sure everyone in that venue would agree. If you’re feeling a bit more peckish, and drinks aren’t enough to keep you going, there is also a wonderful Pie Minister available in-venue for all of us Brudenell dwellers, with multiple vegetarian and vegan options. After trying the Heidi, which packed with delicious, steaming hot Goats cheese, sweet potato, and spinach, packaged all in crispy layers of filo goodness, I can confirm it is not a pie you want to miss. It also came with a good portion of fluffy mash, drizzled with piping hot gravy. The spacious grounds provided room for everyone to enjoy the music comfortably, whether they wanted to just sway along, or full-on bounce off of the walls in a mosh pit. Additionally, the stage was set with a soft blue hue, which indicated the start of the evening’s entertainment. First up was alt-indie singer Fiona-Lee, who enchanted the crowd with her soulful vocals and acoustic songs. Fiona-Lee’s performance was a perfect start to the night, leaving the audience swaying speechlessly in silence at her thought through, personal lyrics.

Her songs were deep, yet energetic, which definitely was a treat to everyone’s ears and her whole presence on stage was all-around eye-catching (catch me fan-girling soon). The type of music to make you want to sit in a pretty field and cry about your life (but in a pretty way) I would say. The stage transformed once again, and indie-pop band Girl Scout took the stage by storm with their energetic presence and humour for a performance which could only be described as unforgettable, delivering head-bang worthy tune, after head-bang worthy tune. The Swedish born and bred band brought the crowd to their feet with their upbeat music, synchronized dancing, and instrumental solos. Songs like ‘Mothers and Fathers’ had everyone dancing and the drums reverberating throughout the space. The band’s stage presence was magically entrancing and cheerful, enhanced by the alternating blue and neon pink lighting, decorating the stage in pink and blue polka dots, whilst creating a silhouette of the band members. Other songs performed such as ‘Weirdo’ showcased Girl Scout’s uniqueness and ability to keep the audience entertained.

Truly, they captivated the audience and got them on their feet, bopping along to their music, making a night we’ll never forget. Meanwhile, photographers eagerly tried to get closer to the stage, to get that perfect shot, no doubt wanting to write about this beautiful experience, just as I am now, at Aire Street Studio. The crowd was completely immersed, bobbing their heads and dancing along. As the set concluded, the audience eagerly awaited more from Girl Scout, knowing that their performance was proof to their passion and talent. This electrifying night left fans and music enthusiasts yearning for the band’s next visit to Leeds. Skål! (Or cheers, as Girl Scout taught us!).
